Drama - NCEA Level 2

Students will work independently, in small groups and as a whole class to create performances and presentations throughout the year. They will explore a variety of theatre forms and skills and create their own scenes as well as work with scripted pieces. All assessments are done internally and require both performance work and written tasks. This course is designed to further develop students practical skills in Drama as well as explore a variety of Theatre genres.
Students will begin the year working on Drama 2.1 - Apply drama techniques in a scripted context. They can choose to work individually or in pairs and will present a short scripted scene.
Students will begin working on Drama 2.8 - Script a scene suitable for drama performance. They will work individually to write their own script to fit a set brief. The scripts will not be required to be fully performed, but students will need to have other students do a rehearsed reading of the script to give a sense of what it might look like on stage. This task is due in Term 2.
Students will complete 2.8 write a scripted scene suitable for performance.
Students will work towards Drama 2.6 - Perform a substantial acting role in a scripted production which will be assessed at the end of term 2. they will work as a whole class and go through the theatre process from casting, rehearsing and performing. They will perform to an invited audience, and family are welcome to attend. This will be performed at the end of Term 2.
Students work towards Drama 2.4 - Use complex performance skills associated with a drama or theatre form or period. They explore the various acting techniques of a theatre form and are required to perform short scenes to show their understanding of this theatre form. Students will work in small groups.
Students will begin working on Drama 2.2 - Devise and perform a drama to realise an intention. They will work in small groups to create a scene based on a set topic. They will be assessed on how effectively they communicate an idea to the audience using storytelling techniques and technologies such as lighting. This piece will be assessed in Term Two.
Students will be rehearse and present their work for Drama 2.2 - devise and perform to realise an intention.
Recommended Prior Learning
14 credits NCEA Level 1, or with approval of Head of Drama. Students may have participated in performance work outside of school that may help them prepare, or activities within school such as speech-making, debating and other performance opportunities would also help with preparedness. Students need to be confidently willing to work with others, create and memorise scripts and perform on stage.
