Physical Education - NCEA Level 1

Students taking this course should expect to participate in both theoretical (50%) and physical (50%) activities. Students will gain knowledge of both structure and body function in relation to physical activity and learn to perform a range of physical skills. Practicals could include; Turbo Touch, Bouldering, Volleyball, Basketball, Fitness, with other activities at the discretion of the Teacher. Other skill areas that are developed are interpersonal, group and leadership skills.
AS90962 - Participate actively in a variety of physical activities and explain factors that influence own participation

This assessment requires students to participate in a range of different activities with a high level of enthusiasm and effort. Students will be asked to reflect, through a series of logs, on how these activities impacted their well being, either positively or negatively.
AS90963 - Demonstrate understanding of the function of the body as it relates to the performance of physical activity
5 credits Internal (Literacy credits)
This assessment requires students to learn about exercise physiology, biomechanics and anatomy as related to the performance of physical activities There will be a series of assessments in each of these areas.
AS90964 Demonstrate quality movement in the performance of a physical activity.
3 credits Internal
This assessment requires students to meet key performance indicators for Turbo Touch over the time of the unit.
AS90966 - Demonstrate Interpersonal Skills in a group and explain how these skills impact on others.
Students will be required to demonstrate interpersonal skills in their Turbo Touch team training. They will then reflect on how they demonstrated the interpersonal skills and the affect this had on their team. This will be in the form of a series of reflection logs.

AS90967 - Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes. (Optional)
3 credits Internal (Literacy credits)
This assessment requires students to complete an activity (bouldering). They will analyse their performance then plan strategies to improve this. They will describe the outcomes.
Recommended Prior Learning
It is recommended that any student taking this course should have a keen interest in Sports and other physical activities. They should also have achieved a minimum of Curriculum Level 5 in junior Physical Education and would benefit from having adequate literacy skills.
