Vocational Learning

Vocational Learning is Fraser High Schools' Careers Centre. Vocational Learning aims to support every student and prepare them for life after school, by providing meaningful pathways throughout their time at school and equipping students to move into either further training, tertiary education or the workplace.

Vocational Learning is open every day, including lunchtimes and intervals and the staff can provide students with career information and have access to the following:

  • A a wide range of resources and information from New Zealand?s tertiary education providers (universities, polytechnics, Wananga, industry training organisations)
  • Career Quest - a computer-based, interactive questionnaire to help with career choice.
  • STAR and Gateway Courses
  • Gateway - Work Placement
  • Waikato Trades Academy
  • Careers Advice
  • Subject Selection Advice

STAR Courses

(Secondary, Tertiary Alignment Resource)

Courses are available to help students decide what they want to do when they leave school. STAR provides opportunities for students to explore career pathways, participate in tertiary short courses and facilitate the smooth transition from school to further education or employment.

  • University Papers for Yr 13
  • Short Introductory Courses (Taster) for Yr 10 - 13
  • Short Courses with Unit Standards for Yr 11-13

Gateway - Year 12 & 13 (Year 11 - Term 3 & 4)

Gateway allows students to spend time in the workplace, like a real employee as well as attending school and working towards NCEA. Gateway provides senior students with valuable learning and work opportunities.

If you are going to be a Year 12 or 13 student and you wish to choose Gateway as a subject, you will need to have an interview with the Director of Vocational Learning. On entry into Gateway, an individual learning plan will be developed and you will work towards reaching the outcomes detailed in this plan in a self-paced environment. Students will work towards unit standard gaining credits towards their NCEA. Student MUST also participate in structured work-based training (a minimum of 4 days? work experience) based on their strengths and career interest. There are 2 Options.

  1. Gateway class & work placement:

Pre-requisites: Yr 12 or 13, NCEA Level 1 English and excellent attendance. Students must attend an Interview with the Director to assess suitability for self-paced learning and work experience of which they must do a minimum of 4 days.

  1. Gateway Placement:

Pre-requisites: Yr 11, 12 or students who would like the opportunity to participate in a work placement in an area of interest/career choice. Students will have an interview with the Gateway Workplace Coordinator to assess suitability for work experience. Students must complete 4-10 days? work placement and a workplace Unit Standard in their own time, in the workplace or during scheduled school time

Waikato Trades Academy

The WTA is a partnership between Wintec and Waikato Secondary Schools. Students attend school and the WTA giving them the opportunity to gain NCEA Level 2 at school as well as working towards a Level 1, 2 or 3 National Trades Qualifications at Wintec in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, carpentry, plumbing and gas fitting, electrical, hospitality, hairdressing, agriculture. Students will attend school 4 days per week and Wintec 1 day per week.
